Chemical dependency is seen today by clinicians as a disease rather than a matter of will power and just, “saying no.” It is a disease that can be identified in stages with both environmental and physiological components. Many of the clients seen in treatment agree that substance abuse is a major facet of their lives and it is causing problems at home, work, school, and in the community. The chemically-abusive client cannot be looked at “in a vacuum,” if treatment is to be successful. Most often, the client is part of a family system that has a history of substance abuse. American Therapeutic Corporation’s substance abuse program provides a consistent, structured atmosphere for clients. Generally, the program consist of education regarding the 12 Step Program, education about the disease, recovery for clients and family, and development of support systems in the community at work and at school.
